Michigan Commercial Building Energy Code enforcement started April 22, 2025

E3M Solutions recently completed MEP engineering design for Pickle & Pin, a new indoor pickle ball and golf simulator social bar in Grand Rapids. Below we review the project’s objectives, methodologies, and the transformative impact of the renovation on the community and building performance.

Methodology
The methodology involved a detailed assessment of the existing building, followed by the design and implementation of new mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems. E3M collaborated with Pure Architects to ensure the design met both functional and aesthetic goals.

Background
E3M Solutions, a Michigan-based MEP engineering and energy services firm, embarked on a project to revitalize a 6300 square foot space in Grand Rapids. The goal was to transform a deteriorating building into a lively destination for the community, aligning with E3M’s commitment to sustainable and innovative engineering solutions.

The project involved a comprehensive MEP engineering design process, focusing on the renovation of the existing facility. E3M’s design team conducted a thorough investigation of the building’s current state, identifying areas for improvement and opportunities to implement modern mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems.

Collaboration with Pure Architects was crucial in achieving the project’s design intent and budgetary goals. E3M’s team worked closely with Pure to ensure that the new systems not only met the functional requirements but also aligned with the aesthetic and operational vision for the space.

The successful completion of this project highlights E3M’s expertise in delivering tailored engineering solutions that enhance building performance and contribute to community development. The renovated space now serves as a testament to the power of innovative engineering in creating sustainable and enjoyable environments.

Our Solution
Comprehensive Assessment

E3M conducted a thorough evaluation of the existing building to identify areas for improvement and opportunities for modernization.

Innovative Design
The design team developed new mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems tailored to the building’s new use and community needs.

Collaborative Approach
E3M worked closely with Pure Architects to align the design with the project’s aesthetic, sustainability, and budgetary goals.

Sustainable Solutions

The implementation of energy-efficient systems reduced energy consumption and enhanced the building’s sustainability.

“It was a pleasure to work with the E3M team on this project! They are detail oriented and creative in their approach. It was a core goal of ours to bring the energy efficiency of this 120+ year old building up to modern standards and exceed it where we could. This collaborative team delivered on that! They are a group of engineers who listen, think outside of the box and are meticulous in their methodology,” said Blaine Westerlund, project lead.

Community Impact
The renovation of the Pickle & Pin location has transformed a previously abandoned building into a vibrant community hub. This project has provided a new space for residents to gather, fostering a sense of community and engagement.

Energy Efficiency
To maximize energy efficiency for the facility, several design strategies were implemented.

  • Heating and cooling needs are met with high efficiency furnaces and heat pump condensing units. This allows for greater cooling efficiency and less reliance on fossil fuels for heating. Gas can be used only when it is needed most.
  • An energy recovery ventilator for exhaust and ventilation recovers waste heat from the building to temper ventilation air.
  • Instantaneous water heaters were included so water is only heated when it is needed by building occupants.

Modern Amenities
The installation of new plumbing systems/fixtures and updated electrical systems has enhanced the building’s functionality. These modern amenities ensure that the facility meets the needs of its diverse user base, providing comfort and convenience.
